The Schools in Cebu
Cebu is home of the biggest schools and universities in the Visayas and Mindanao region in the Philippines. Most Filipino parents in southern Philippines prefer to send their kids to Cebu for tertiary education.
Among the top universities in Cebu are San Carlos University, University of San Jose Recoletos, University of Cebu, Southwestern University, University of Southern Philippines, University of Visayas, Cebu Doctors University, Cebu Institute of the Technology, Cebu Technological University, Cebu Normal University and many many more. Writing all the names of colleges, vocational schools and high schools will take me 5 pages to do it.
Because of this, it's not surprising to see more young people in the streets of Cebu than the middle aged and senior ones. One European friend used to ask me: "Where are the old ones?" I answered: "Back home in the provinces and islands sorounding Cebu. Most of the young people you find in the City of Cebu came from neighboring islands like Mindanao, Bohol, Leyte, Negros, Siquijor, Samar and ilo-ilo. Once they finish college, they will go back to their home provinces to find work and stay there for good. Well, most of them. But some stay in Cebu, or go to Manila or find work abroad.
So if you plan to study in Cebu, be mindful of your seat mates and class mates. Most of these students from the provinces are humble. But some of them are sons and daughters of Governors, Mayors, Landlords, big businessmen and rich clans of nearby provinces. Back in college, I had a beautiful seat mate who happened to be the daughter of a rich businessman and the incumbent Vice-Governor in the Province of Mindanao. I did not make my move. I was afraid her Dad has some connection with abu sayaf! Just kidding, of course. The truth is that, I really want to make a move. Too bad she liked me. I mean, she liked me to stay far from her all the time. Ha ha ha!
